It’s spring, the time of year when thoroughbred racing is at the fore of our sporting consciousness. This year, it’s more pronounced than usual, as locally stabled racehorse Winx attempts to make history. To mark the occasion, our feature story this quarter is with champion jockey Hugh Bowman, who has formed a history-making partnership with the remarkable mare, one of Australia’s greatest racehorses. Their performances this season will define Winx’s legacy. Is she equal-best or, perhaps, the greatest of all time? On August 18, she took the record for the most consecutive wins from Black Caviar and in October will attempt her fourth-successive Cox Plate victory. We’re privileged to have Hugh as a Friend of the Brand, alongside Winx’s trainer Chris Waller. These two, and the rest of the team behind Winx, live the Mercedes-Benz mission – the best or nothing – every day. Everyone at Mercedes-Benz Parramatta will be watching with bated breath, just like the rest of Australia, on 27 October. Hugh talked to us in early July as he and Winx were preparing for their big season; you can read the story on page 8. Elsewhere, Terry Kennedy takes us on a journey to The Everest, Australia’s richest horse race. On page 36, Terry writes that the inaugural running last year was very much a journey into the unknown for the racing community, just like the mountain was before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made their famous first ascent. While taking on Everest is perhaps the world’s greatest adventure, our travel writer Paul V. Walters went on a much milder and more accessible escapade around the streets of the Portuguese city of Porto recently, as he describes on page 26. We also have a contribution from Turkey this quarter. Artist Berkay Ceylan kindly provided some of his artworks, including the cover image, for us to use in this issue. You can see more of his work on page 30. There is very much a theme of adventure in this magazine. Mercedes-Benz Parramatta Financial Controller Lyn Parkes recently travelled to Africa as part of a small group that raised funds to take Kenyan school students to neighbouring Maasai Mara National Reserve for the very first time. Mercedes-Benz Parramatta contributed to the fundraising effort, so it’s rewarding to see the gesture was appreciated by the students. Read the story on page 32. Closer to home, in Parramatta, we can experience a range of cultures without having to venture far from home. Our city is a cultural melting pot, and this issue reflects that diversity. On page 17 we meet locally based artist Shireen Taweel, who has created a spectacular copper artwork inspired by Australia’s longest standing mosque and then on page 21, we talk to the new President of the United India Association, Sreeni Pillamarri.
