GEORGINA HUMPHRIES | Sculptor, Melbourne I am creating a large sculpture installation, which is a set of giant, oversized donuts. My inspiration came from an architectural design at RMIT university, which had donuts as one of its key features. I am in the process of figuring out what it will be made out of. Previously, I have used recycled air-conditioning ducting, but I am looking at clear pipe so that the pieces can be illuminated from the inside. I will also use recycled truck tyres as donuts on the ground, where people can sit on them and react to the work. Ideally, it would be great to get one of the donut stalls that we have seen in Parramatta Lanes in the past set up at my installation, so I will try and tee that up. This is my second year at Parramatta Lanes. Last year I created a colourful patchwork sail made of recycled material that hung in the Roxy walkway and linked two events. I will have a similar material covering my donuts, which are going to be at Batman Walk. I studied fine arts and sculpture at RMIT and then continued on to a masters in public art, which is what got me into working at Parramatta Lanes. Most of my work is outdoors at music festivals and festivals for local city councils. Wherever I can, I try and use recycled materials. The key one I will use on this project is reclaimed tent materials. I do a lot of projects at music festivals, and there is a whole gamut of junk that gets left behind including a stack of brand new tents. I started collecting the material and for the last five years I have been using it in artworks. It is crazy that people can’t be bothered to pick their tents up. There is so much tent material to collect each time. I’m looking forward to Parramatta Lanes, it is a great festival with a great combination of food and drinks and artworks. I went last year and it was fantastic. This year, I’ll have a lot of friends and family coming along as well. CULTURE 23
