CULTURE Winter warmer URBANDRIVER 23 PARRAMATTA SHINES IN THE WINTERLIGHT WORDS Nick Nichols PHOTOS Winterlight AS THE NAME SUGGESTS, Winterlight fully embraces the change of season and injects a dose of frosty fun into the city centre for the entire family to enjoy. Now in its ninth year, the 17-day festival has become a major cultural event in Parramatta, highlighting the best the city has to offer as a foodie and entertainment haven. This year, Winterlight brings all things alpine to Prince Alfred Square including Sydney’s largest open-air ice-skating rink and supported by the Alpine Food Village, amusement rides and plenty of street entertainment. Starting with the very young, there will be dedicated skating sessions for kids who want to learn a new winter skill. Back again this year is the team of ‘kanga helpers’ on hand if kids need help to find their feet on the ice. For the ultimate in cool that’s sure to get the heart racing, there’s a 30-metre-long slide made entirely of ice. The Winterlight magic really comes alive at night against the backdrop of a giant illuminated ferris wheel, interactive light installation, carnival rides, ice-skating performances and free kids’ activities, as well as live music. Let’s not forget the fabulous winter food. Winterlight is timed to coincide with the NSW school holidays and the fun stretches from July 5 to July 21. There’s plenty for adults and children to enjoy, and entry is free. The nights may be getting cold but that’s more reason than ever to get out and about as the Parramatta CBD comes alive with the annual Winterlight festival this July.
